SP Investment Management Sdn Bhd (SPIM) is a licensed fund manager regulated by Securities Malaysia under the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007.
We manage investment portfolios covering a wide range of asset classes to meet the needs of investors. Specializing in managing absolute return funds, our core focus is to deliver positive returns to our investors regardless of market movements. We hold firm to our belief that with independent research centered on our ‘catalytically driven’ investment philosophy, combined with a risk-based approach in managing our portfolios, we are able to provide an edge for our investors.
As an independent, owner-operated asset management firm, we have flexibility and control over our company culture to fully align our interests with our investors. We are as invested in the funds we manage and we hold true to the principle of managing investors’ money like we would our own.
With a combined experience of over 40 years in the fund management industry, we are able to provide an edge to our investors. We adopt an investment approach comprising of 3 key components:
Value investing, as introduced by Benjamin Graham, has seen its success proven time and again throughout the history of the financial world. We embrace the value investing approach in our investment selection methodology. Rigorous analysis and on-the-ground research are undertaken to uncover the underlying intrinsic value in all our investments. However, investing in an undervalued business brings a risk of what is coined as a ‘value trap’ where undervalued investments take time to be realized, which brings us to our second key constituent.
We recognize that timeframe is an important criteria to investors as it is fair for all investors to expect performance in the medium term. As such, the other essential part of our investment philosophy is identifying catalytic developments that will drive our investments to new heights, be it economically-driven, policy-driven, or company-specific factors. Frequent meetings with top management and information gathering from multiple sources are undertaken to discover these developments. Various valuation methods are then applied to assess the impact of these developments on our investments.
We achieve success by taking measured risks. By forming a base value through fundamental research and recognizing the potential upside with the identification of catalysts, investments are then made based on the established risk-reward ratio. Teng Chee has more than 10 years of investment experience in local and regional markets. He manages the overall business direction and strategy of SPIM. With his hands-on approach, he is actively involved in investment, product development and marketing. His investment philosophy focuses on absolute returns and strong risk management policies to ensure growth and sustainability.
Prior to SPIM, Teng Chee was Head of Equity at HLG Asset Management Sdn Bhd (HLGAM) where he managed institutional and unit trust funds and was primarily responsible for building up its in-house research capabilities. Teng Chee began his career as a corporate finance executive in OSK Securities Bhd in 1999.
Teng Chee graduated with a Master of Science in Mathematical Trading and Finance from City University Business School, UK and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from King’s College London, UK. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.
Kar Fu has more than 10 years of investment experience in equities and fixed income. He is responsible for managing the investment of funds and research.
Prior to SPIM, Kar Fu was a fixed income fund manager at HLGAM. He was responsible for managing unit trust funds and was involved in fixed income research. Kar Fu began his career as a financial futures trader in London where he spent more than 3 years trading the European interest rate market.
He graduated with a Master of Science in Finance from Imperial College London, UK and a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from University College London, UK.
Herni joined SPIM in April 2011 as Head of Operation and Account. She has more than 10 years of experience working in asset management and stockbroking companies. She is responsible for the overall function relating to the operation and finance of the company.
Prior to joining SPIM, Herni was the head of operations in Hong Leong Asset Management Sdn Bhd (HLAM). She was overseeing the daily operational and finance functions of HLAM covering trade support and portfolio valuation as well as financial reporting. Herni began her career as a settlement executive in HLG Securities Sdn Bhd.
Herni graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Lewis University, USA and a Diploma in Statistics from Mara Institute of Technology.
Linda joined SPIM in April 2011 as Head of Administration. She has more than 15 years of experience working in asset management companies and research house. She is responsible for the day-to-day running of the company including office administration, human resources and client servicing.
Prior to joining SPIM, Linda was with HLAM and was responsible for handling office administration and assisting the chief executive officer. She was also previously attached to RHB Asset Management Sdn Bhd and RHB Research Institute Sdn Bhd. Linda started her career as a secretary to the general manager in Golden Hope Plantations Bhd.
Linda holds a Diploma in Secretary and Public Relations.
Nurizan has more than 10 years of experience in compliance and risk monitoring. She is responsible for the legal and compliance functions of the company.
Prior to SPIM, Nurizan was attached to CIMB Investment Bank Bhd and was responsible for capital market risk monitoring functions. She was also previously attached to HLG Unit Trust Bhd and was responsible for compliance functions of the company.
Nurizan graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Finance and a Diploma in Business Studies from Universiti Technology MARA.

Asmawati joined SPIM in Jan 2012 as an Accountant. She has more than 15 years of experience in the audit and accounting field and is responsible for the finance and accounting functions of the company.
Prior to joining SPIM, Asmawati was attached to MK Land Holdings Bhd and was responsible for the accounting matters of the company. She was also previously attached to HLG Unit Trust Bhd.
Asmawati graduated with a Bachelor in Accountancy (Hons) from University Utara Malaysia and a Diploma in Accountancy from Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak.
